Need Pictures on a 1983 CJ5 Jeep vaccum lines with offset air cleaner housing? I just purchased a 1983 CJ5 jeep from oregon and brought it to California and is not smog ready. All the smog components and lines have been taken off. I just purchased the original carburator and air cleaner but am missing all vacuum lines. The air cleaner mounts on the valve cover with a bracket and the top of the air cleaner lays on the carb. Has anyone ever seen this? do I have the correct air cleaner housing? Does anyone have any pictures of their engine with this type of air cleaner? My engine is a inline 6cyl and again it is a 1983 CJ5. All your answers are truly and very appreciated. Thank you.. Oh! and by the way I have purchased me a chiltons jeep book but is not helping me.

LW replied: "I used to have a 1982 CJ7 that died quite some years ago. What a marvelous vehicle. Anyway, try here: and here: That ought to help. I also have (somewhere) the factory technical manual for the old '82 around here somewhere. I've snagged your address and if I bump into it, I'll email you. Good luck with your new toy."

Is it expensive to replace heating coil in 1979 CJ5 Jeep? I I have a 1979 CJ5 Jeep and it loses water. For example, When I turn the heater on in winter time, all I see is steam coming out of window's went. They said the heating coil needs to be replaced. Is it expensive? I live in Plano, Texas. I will pick the best answer later.

anebrich replied: "If you have the work done it may be expensive however; if you do it yourself it won't be as bad. I would imagine it could be upwards of $500 to have someone do it for you but probably less then $100 if you do it yourself. Not real familiar with the CJ5's but I can't imagine it would be that hard to get to. Try going to and ask around in the CJ tech section - they'll point you in the right direction."

mybuttstinks2001 replied: "Check JCWHITNeY.com It is a small radiator. You can pull your old one and take it to a radiator shop and they can fix it for $30 You need to pull the 2 hoses going to it on the firewall in the engine compartment. After that, get under the dash on the right side and unbolt the "box" under the dash. There will be a few cables hooked to it. Pull the clips and the cables will come off. It is not to hard. My 1st car ws a 1979 CJ-7 and I completely tore it down and rebuilt it when I was 14 with no clue. Good Luck"

oklatom replied: "No they didn't. There is no such thing as a heating coil. They told you the "Heater Core" needs to be replaced. That is the little radiator like thing inside the heater box that lets the fan blow through the fins that have hot water in the pipes, and warm the vehicle. It's labor intensive, but it's something that needs to be done because it will just get worse, and eventually your vehicle will overheat. Ask for an estimate and if you have a good mechanic at a non dealer shop, ask for a second opinion there also. Part alone will be in the $50 range."

drag1line replied: "As you live in Plano..I live in Houston. For now, disconnect thte two hoses going to the heater CORE and using a hose connector and two small clamps, connect them into a loop. DO NOT PLUG THEM. Now no water goes to the heater core and no leak for now..To hot to do this right now. For cost..no labor, but not hard as talked about above, at Auto Zone. P/N 399210 $35.99 Good Luck"

br_wy replied: "Oklatom has no clue. It is not a very labor intensive job. Take out the front seat (4 bolts 9/16" socket) for clearance. Take of the cables and hoses, enclosure. Install new unit and reassemble should only take you 2 hrs tops."

How do I find out the value of a 1967 CJ5 Jeep? My husband and I recently decided we wanted to find a Jeep that he can play with. We found someone who is willing to do a trade with us. Here is his ad: 1967 Jeep CJ-5. v-6, 3 spd, headers. Bikini top, soft top. New steering wheel, Kenwood cd player, new gauges. Rear seat included, but needs a cover. New wheels and tires. Good condition. $4500 obo I need to know from what is listed above if the price listed is fair. I cannot find anything online that will give me a value. If anyone has any experience or knowledge with these types of older cars please help! Or if you know of a site I can go to, please let me know. I dont want to pay more than we should on this. I have found a few 1993 Wranglers that are listed cheaper than the CJ5. Is this a collector's car or something rare? Thanks!!! I have already checked the normal places...Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds and a general Google search. To see pics of the Jeep we are looking at go to: I tried to just copy and paste pics, but couldnt figure it out!

nICK C replied: "kelly's blue book look it up on a search engine"

Roger N replied: "I've been shopping for a long time for a Jeep. To find the "value" of one, you need to look at all that are in your area and take an average. The only reason to pay a bit more for anything pre-1975 is because it would be smog exempt. Otherwise, you money is best spent on 1997 and newer because that was the year they changed to coils up front. You can get more articulation out of coils than with leaf springs."

joseph m replied: "go to EDMUNDS.COM, IT WILL TELL YOU WHAT JEEP IS WORTH"

Aspen & Kendra S replied: "kbb.com (kellybluebook.com) they have ratings based on condition, however not too sure about things like collectors, etc."

mac227@sbcglobal.net replied: "www.kbb.com"

whatz_hisname replied: "Jeeps that old are hard to find. So, if you want a vintage jeep you will have to pay what you think is fair. I think 4500 is a fair price. You won't find any jeeps of this genre that are cheap. The older they are, the more money they command. They are definitly in demand - so the more demand the more money. That is a good jeep to play with - easy to work on and a lot of parts are available."

ramblin' robert replied: "go to ebay motors and see what a similar jeep is going for. cj 5's and cj 7's go for about the same amount. You should know that the 60's jeeps often have frame issues, and were never that good to begin with. the 1970's CJ 7s are a better bet and the motor is 10 times easier to get parts for (the 258 inline six) in any event, 4500 sounds a bit high. but w/o pics hard to say. good luck. and have fun.rob"

grungeant replied: "my 73 cj-5 was only about 75% complete, not running, and not in the best physical shape, and needed much work and I sold it for $1200 I think $4500 for a jeep that appears to be in decent physical condition, starts and runs decent and does not appear to need any major work is extreemly fair price. best way to find out what it is worth is look on e-bay, and compare the prices to the actual condition of the jeep. only look at the one's that are selling, I know there are one's that say buy now for $20,000 and they have been on there over and over again for months, just click on the one's comproable to the one you want to buy, click watch this item, then see what it actually sold for at the end of the week. no book is going to be able to tell you how much an old jeep is worth because there is so many different modifications they could have and so many different levels of being "rigged" together they could be in. I highly recomend the jeep owners bible by Moses Ludel it tells exactly what to look for on every era of jeep made made, and it is written so the average person can make sense of it even if you have very little mechanical knowledge, but it is not for idiots, it is also helpful if you are very mechanically inclined. it can be found at almost every book store I have been in. i own 2 of them he puts out a new one every few years, but the old information stays the same, he just adds the newer stuff also if you are looking for something that is compatable with many parts, and you can get parts for easily you want something 1976 and newer, I thought all the one's from the 70's wher compatable when I bought my 73, but it turns out only 76 and up are 72-75 are probably some of the best made, aside from the weak frame on the non renegade models, but real oddball years, not compatable with anything other than 72-75, and really hard to find parts for, most parts must be fabricated"

whats the differinc between a 1975 cj5 jeep or a 1977 cj5 jeep how do i tell them apart? i have two jeep i dont know the year it's ither a 1975 or 1977 cj5 i dont know

Chuck Norris replied: "the vin # and this guide i found when i googled it"

JokerĀ® replied: "The second digit of the VIN will tell you the Year (J8F83AH365789 = 1978 Jeep CJ-5) 5 = 1975 6 = 1976 7 = 1977 8 = 1978 9 = 1979 0 = 1980 In 1976 the tub and frame were modified slightly from earlier versions. The windshield frame also changed meaning that tops from 1955-1975 will not fit a 1976-1983 CJ-5 and vice-versa."

Can you take the frame from a 1978 DJ5 jeep and use it on a 1977 CJ5 jeep? I have a friend that has a 1977 CJ5 jeep that has a bad frame. He found a 1978 DJ5 and wants to know if he can use the frame from the DJ5 on his 77 CJ.

MumboVonJumbo replied: "Yep!"

whytexboy01 replied: "yep you can!! as long is it the same model within that 10 years it should fit"

what is the mpg for a 1975 cj5 jeep? Also, what are some good mod's i coulod make to this car? I bought a 1975 jeep cj5 and I don't know if I should restore it or modify it a bit. I'm mainly going to use it in the street, but I want to be able to use the car for what it was made for, offroading. I want to have teh extra hp when needed and traction. I don't know if what it originally (V6) came with is enough.

javelin1973401 replied: "The 258 is a great engine but if you want more power think about putting on a 4.0 liter head from a newer Jeep. There are sites dedicated to this upgrade The 4.0 liter head flows better and increases HP. You could swap in the 4 liter engine but this is much harder."

mike k replied: "i got a 78 cj5 v-8 and its great. mpg is not good i get about 8-10 city not sure about highway. v-6 is good enough. i thought i needed the v-8 and i ended up getting a 180 dollar fine. i kinda of restored/modified mine. the only mods i added was lift, wheels, and some small stuff but other than that its pretty stock"

what is the value of a 1982 jeep cj5 ? i have a 1982 jeep cj5. it runs good in good condition for an 82. if i replace the top get rid of the little rust and repaint it how much would it be worth.

jeepsarecool replied: "It is worth whatever someone will pay for it."

Nicole replied: "Depends on the miles and the condition. Either way jeeps hold their value so you could probably get at least $1000 even in the worst condition. If it's got less than 100k you could definitley get a couple thousand."

How do I build framework for 1977 jeep CJ5 soft top? I bought the jeep with the top in a box. I am not sure how to assemble it. I have installed the hoops, but the rest is a big puzzle to me.

jim c replied: "try looking at a newer jeep in a car lot if you cant find any other77s or close to it. you should get the general idea looking at a couple other soft tops"

drag1line replied: "If it is original jeep, head to the jeep parts counter and get them to print out the parts page. If Best top, which I have, you can down load the instruction manual. Good Luck"

where can i find the lowest priced lockers for amc 20 rear axles on a 1983 Jeep Cj5? im looking for low priced lockers for my 1983 jeep Cj5 and i have AMC 20 rear axles, i can't seem to find any for under $325.... if you have any suggestions please email me

charolastra replied: "Don't spend your money on a locker!!! it's a AMC 20....just weld the spider gears. What size of tires are you running. On a AMC 20 i would put anything bigger than 33 or you're going to break the axles!! i have a 79 CJ5, 304, AMC 20 rear welded, Dana 44 front welded and i want to swap the weak AMC 20 for a Dana 44. so once again don't spend your money on that!!!! Take care and good luck!!!"

Michael V replied: "Same as the first guy. the cheapest locker you ll find for it would be around 325. if you really want to keep that rear axle in one piece i wouldn't put a locker in it or weld it. it just wont survive. ive got a dana 35 in my cherokee welded up with 37s and i break an axle shaft every other month."
