how do you put spider gears back on a 2000 jeep wrangler? i was trying to take the axel out of my 2000 jeep wrangler, but when i took off the clip, the spider gears fell off. . .how do i put them back on?

reza g replied: "THE SAME WAY U TOOK EM OFF"

JIMINSARAH replied: "just place one gear in at a time roll the ring gear and place the second spider gear in then check for alignment it will probably take a couple tries to get it right"

charolastra replied: "It's easier if you take the case or carrier out to install them back. Now you might have other problems. If you took out the c clip or lock out this shouldn't have happen. The only way to take out the spiders gears is by taking the pin that holds them. And you even had to take the lock pin out in order to do that. If you have the track-lok carrier or case is not as easy as it sounds. The track-lok have clutches under 2 spider gears. Is it for the front or rear diff.? If it's the rear you have a Dana 35 might as well beef it up while you're there. Send me an email and I'll be glad to help you out step by step or just google it. Good luck!!"

how do I replace the spider gears for a dana 35 jeep axle? already took old ones out (Shattered them) I have the side gears replaced, but I can not seem to fit the new spider gears in. It appears that where they sit is concave and they are not going in. Do I need to spin the tire to FORCE) them n?

cuervo25_1 replied: "to be honest your best bet is to get rid of the d35, it is garbage. the d 35 is notorius for breaking gears and axels.instead find a d44 or a chrysler 8.25 they are much stronger and wont break as long as you don't rough house with it too much (trying to run extreme rockcrawling and such) then rebuild it with new seals and bearings while it is out so you wont have to worry about those ."

Eric C replied: "A Dana 44 swap is the best way to go."

how to weld spider gears on my jeep wrangler??????????? Its a 1992 jeep wrangler and it has a dana 30 front i would like to weld it up.I have a welder and know a little bit on third members. And i know it will work i just need to know how many welds and were to place them. i would like pics if i could???

jimporsche86 replied: "Put 44s under it with a locker..."

jeepster replied: "Weld every other slat in the gear.As long as its not the ring or pinion gears and you don't weld the axles in you will see the other gears two on each side you can go on line and find pics I have seen them before try typing in poor mans locker.Your right it will work you will be locked in the front full time as long as you use it for off roading only might as well weld the back up to then all 4 tires well be locked. If you break the spider gears out on the trail you may not have nothing to repair inside to get off the trail at least if you have a differential inside and you break it you can weld it up and get off the trail.I for one run the rubicon often and have seen this set up break anyone who knows wheeling will try and talk you out of what your going to do welding the spiders are a last ditch effort GOOD LUCK remember trail rules you pack it in you pack it out"

rickie m replied: "if ya really think ya gotta doit,it work's better if the axle is out and layin flat u get better weld penetration, you aint gonna be weldin on the teeth!!!ur gonna be layin ur bead's,on the side gear's,to the outside, oppisite of the teeth, and ur weld will connect, side gears to the carrier, that's the part the ring gear is bolted to,clean the grease off real good, and if u can get a small grinder in that spot, grind a little off,the carrier and the side gear,ur weld wwill stick better,ur only gonna have enough area to get 4 seperate, bead's and ur only gonna have room for bout 11/2 to 2in. of weld on each bead, makem good,i used to do this on medium powered street cars, when i couldnt afford a posi, thing is the welds will eventully, break it will be ur weak link,no big deal when it does the diff, will go back to being open, but it will be junk, but will get u home,if nothin else breaks, when u hear somethin that sounds like a twelve guage shotgun go off,u no the welds broke...good luck.."

axle is acting like it has a locker in it and it dosen't. did the spider gears bust again? its a 99 jeep wrangler w/ the dana 35. one loud pop is heard be for it acts as a locker only on sharper turns.

david c replied: "Sure sounds like spider gears - could be crown gear and pinion as well. It's gonna take some $$$ to fix though."

mikey replied: "yup, time for a tear-down, sorry, but that is just the way it is...you might want to consider finding a replacement dana 44, it is stronger, and less prone to breakage...good luck-chrysler was selling them a few months ago as a complete unit, might check on that..."

rick b replied: "Does sound like a spider gear, and if you are saying again then what caused it? Just cause its a piece of cr** or i dont know is not a answer, for it to happen it is driver caused or something wasnt repaired right or somthing else is also wrong causing the problem. It is very rear for spider gears to "just break" and twice since '99 is like being struck by lightning and bitten by a shark at the same time"

Dana 35 spider gears? I have a 2003 wrangler. I just did a major tune up the other day. I pulled the back cover off my d35 and everything appears to look good except my spider gears!!! Granted I am hard on my Jeep, and it gets abuse. Just wondering why my spider gears are getting beat up and chipped? Could a bearing be going? or is it just the shock when i'm driving hard? Will fixing this allow my jeep to shift more smoothly? Thanks.

Rick M replied: "spider gears transfer power from left to right wheels..if they are chipped they have been abused...best to replace prior to failure...they break= you don't go..would have nothing to do with shifting but might create slop in the drive train"

ubu replied: "Fixing it certainly will make it shift easier. Probably chipped from driving it hard. If you do drive hard then think about replacing the bearings. New bearings and new spiders fix it like new."

Trouble with a Detroit E-Z Locker Slipping when first installed in a 99 jeep tj with a dana 35? I just put a detriot e-z locker in my 99 Jeep TJ. As soon as I started driving it the locker would pop and jerk to the left of you could feel it slipping. This is the second new one that I have tried to install in my carrier. This carrier that I have in it was the replacement for my original trac lock locker that I blew the spider gears in last year. The ring placement on the carrier is the same as the trac lock and the ring and pinion did not have to be reset. Do I need to try a different carrier with a different spacing for the ring gear and then also reset the pinion? What is the inside measurements supposed to be on a standard carrier for the locker? I had the first locker installed at a local jeep shop and he had the same problem as the second locker. Any suggestions just let me know. Thanks

philbertpheinstein replied: "Sell the Jeep for scrap and buy a car.."

mr5oh replied: "You did remove the thrust washers from spider gears and re-install them on the new locker right? If you don't have the thrust washers on there it will do this. So if I read that right, you have a trac lock carrier? If you did, you did order the locker for the trac lock carrier right? I thought only PowerTrax was making them for the trac lock carrier but I could be wrong. You can't install an EZ locker meant for an open carrier into a track lock carrier. If you are using the correct carrier with the correct locker, AND you have the thrust wasers installed on the locker, I'd say somethings funny about your carrier. You can replace the carrier, pinion depth won't need to be changed, in fact most likely you won't even have to reset the backlash, but it be best to double check it anyways. If you are unfamilar with gear setup terms (like backlash and such) read this article: All "lunch box" style lockers require that you measure the gap between the drive gear and the mating gear, did the shop do this when they installed it? I doubt they did, otherwise they would have known ahead of time something was wrong. And might as well warn you know, you will be breaking shafts with a Dana35 and a locker, it just isn't strong enough to handle a locker, so get some spare shafts ahead of time. Anymore quesitons, or addtions, feel free to email me, I'll be glad to help."

Help with a 1987 Jeep Wrangler? Im am really interested in buying this 1987 jeep wrangler it has a 350 small block in it. Holly 4 barrel. The only problem is that the spider gears in the rear end are shot. Im good with cars and such i just dont have the time to work on it. About what would it cost me to have a mechanic fix it for me? Including the parts and everything.

HiHood replied: "Probably about a grand or so. Do it your self and add lockers. I would also replace that Holley for a throttlebody injection. Their about 1500 with comp."

Seahorse replied: "It will end up costing you 2 grand."

Mike S replied: "Would be a good time to swap in a stronger rear end. Look at $1000 to $1500 for everything. Mike "

I have a jeep wrangler 95' 4.0 need help with rear differential.? I have a jeep wrangler 95' 4.0. my gears are shot in my rear differential. The shop said it they were spider gears. I want to buy new ones but I don't know what kind to get. I found some here ... any help from an experienced jeeper would be great. Thank you

jammilitary1 replied: "well alot of it depends on how much off roading u do if its just an on road jeep only then yes those will work fine but if your an avid off roader then u might want to look into getting a locker and depends on how much ur wanting to spend u can get a selectable locker air or electric witch is most expensive around $500 or an auto type locker like a eaton or detroit around $200 u can find these parts on jegs.com hope this helped answer ur ?"

Dusty L replied: "You may also check Randy's Ring and Pinion i think it is ringpinion.com if that aint it just google Randys ring and pinion. They have pretty good deals."

AKJason replied: "You might also check the price of a used axle. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to replace the entire thing. I rebuilt one, but it was still noisy and had a bit of play. I finally ended up swapping axles from one of my other Jeeps that was totaled. Works great now."

Kj replied: "a real good place to get jeep parts is they are all professionals and have jamborees...not just a parts store..."

W_Howey replied: "The lockrite didn't come with replacements?? If I recall correctly they are a slightly different size than the stockers... No need to be nasty....... Four Wheel Drive Hardware offers them."

sprinkles replied: "at a dealer. the part number is 2852912, and they are $5.35 each."
