Find Le Mans Audi Diesel in Q&A
Does today's victory at Le Mans by the diesel powered Audi R-10 mean small, light diesel engines in America? Will this new generation of reliable and quiet diesel engines developed by Audi for the 24 hours at Le Mons, which is now a proven reality, coupled with the new sulphur standards for diesel fuel in America, mean that Detroit will finally see the viability of this superior, low polluting technology and get on-board with the rest of the world to stop building gasoline guzzling atmosphere polluters and start building small, light diesel engine powered cars. KUDOS TO AUDI AND TO THE 2 CORVETTES... well done at La Mans.

garrad replied: "Americans small there chalk and cheese but the americans are definitly the cheese.."

uthockey32 replied: "No. Sadly its not only the car company's that fault. With emission standards getting tough all the time its harder and harder for diesel engines to meet the standard. Plus Americans as a rule cant get over the first round of diesel cars in the 80's. The VW TDi is a great motor as well as Mercedes new diesel cars but all have always been low volume cars in America. Until some one can change the consumers point of view I don't see diesel making a big come back. Not to mention most Americans do not know what Le Mans is."

andyoptic replied: "I currently drive a 3litre BMW turbo diesel. My American friends think it is a gasoline engine. I am about to take delivery of a twin turbo 2.7litre V6 Audi A6. The high boost diesel engine is tremedous, high torque and high power and , when properly designed, quiet. A small (0.8litre) high pressure 4 cylinder turbo diesel could be used to power a car about the same size as a Prius and get 50-60 mpgallon. No complexity, just good engineering. Wake up America! Europe is ahead!"

What do you think about the fact that Audi threw into Le Mans the TDI R10? The R10 is the first car to compete in Le Mans powered by a diesel engine. Quite weird, but it develops just about the same power as the other cars, it has loads more torque and it burns less fuel per lap, emitting less fumes. The R10 won the 12-hour race in Sebring some time ago. For American endurance racing fans...

Salenteas replied: "Its great. bring it on. maybe it'll get some more TDI's to come to the states."

ohioroyce replied: "It's no more unusual than when someone tried to run a turbine powered car at LeMans back in the 70's. I'll be watching this weekend to see what happens with the Audi."

For endurance racing fans... When do you think the Audi domination in Le Mans will end? The no.8 Audi R10 put in a dominant performance throughout the 24 hours, with very few technical problems, and finally won 4 laps ahead of the 2nd placed no.17 Pescarolo and the 3rd placed no.8 Audi R10 sister car, which encountered several problems with the suspension and the fuel injectors. It was a 1-3 for the first two diesel cars that have ever competed in Le Mans.

Bill replied: "From the beginning, with AutoUnion later becoming AUDI, there has been an attitude of "advancing technology". This has been apparent for years, both in racing and the consumer market. Their domination will end when the corporate mentality changes, which seems rather unlikely. There have been several fairly sucessful diesel race cars, but AUDI takes the technology into the future."

bigkyle28 replied: "looks to me like when hell freezes over they seem to be able to bring anything and still spank em. shoot the audio is even the best car in the gran tourismo 4 play station game they rule everywhere"

smokes_girl replied: "personal opinion?? when audi falls off the face of the earth, LOL. i just don't see it haeppning anytime soon. audi gets better and better as years go on, and so they will only get stronger and stronger in le mans.. technicall.. yeah, i don't have an answer on that aspect, LOL."

jojo replied: "Audi is an excellent team. Their focus on the LeMans race is perfect and it is unlikely that their domination will decrease in the future."
