Is it hard to change an Air Flow Meter in my 2000 Nissan Maxima?? Nissan will fix it for $380 parts and labor. The part itself is only $170. Is it too hard to fix myself, or is it something the dealership has to do?? Thanks for any input!!

nissan guy replied: "not too hard to change, remove air box assy and air flow meter all with 10mm bolts, but you do need to have your ecm reprogrammed for the updated air flow meter, and i do reccomend factory air flow,"

Mass Air Flow Meter has gone out on my '95 Nissan Maxima. Will it harm the engine if I don't replace it soon? Thanks.

Steven K replied: "only if you drive it to hard"

denise b bad replied: "It depends on the symptoms caused by "has gone out" If it runs reasonably well you can expect it will not be a problem. If it runs like **** then it will damage something, engine, catalytic converters or other. If just the check engine lamp is on but it runs ok there is a tsb to add a redundant ground to the MAF circuit. That may be the problem vs. failure."

Chelsea B replied: "The same thing has happend to my Jetta, but it cost like 300 bucks to fix, so I have been driving it like that for about 3 or 4 months. I don't think it will harm it!"

oscarmzqt replied: "It's called M.A.S. Mass Airflow Sensor. If this fails it no longer sends information to the car's computer. It doesn't know how much airflow is coming in to your engine. Making your car unable to mix fuel/air ratio correctly. Fuel consumption goes up. If it's too expensive, go to the junk yard and get another for a couple bucks."

rakapur2002 replied: "yeah it controls the mixture"

italianpanther7 replied: "1st -You`ll notice the power is down from your engine! 2nd -You get bad enough to notice gas mileage! 3rd -Sooner or later it will effect something else! (i.e.: Your O2 Senors most likely!)"

luisitogonzalezcrazy replied: "YESSSSS.The PCM uses this to further vary the fuel mixture as needed. It will also affect the throttle position sensor, who transmits info to the PCM which is used to change spark timing and fuel mixture as engine load changes. Not to mention O2 sensors, cold stalling, missfire and MIL coming on."

Johnny Bravo replied: "My mass air flow sensor went out on me in June and I had to drive 220 miles on it. I highly recommend that you replace it. You can go to a junk yard like someone else mentioned and try and get a cheap replacement. I bought mine for $280 and when I popped it in it worked. I didn't have time to go to a junk yard (we don't have any here in town). It can cause severe damage to your car and can make it completely undriveable. My Pathfinder kept kicking back and forth and would stall when I would be stopped. The engine was getting choked. I had to drive 220 miles like I said from San Diego to Santa Barbara and as long as I was above 65 miles an hour I was doing fine. I'd get it replaced as soon as possible if I were you. The labor isn't the hard part, it's the actual part that is so expensive."

coolsun replied: "yeah it will harm the engine the calculations that the car makes would get mixed up then the car would have less horsepower more use of gas go get it repaired"
