Instructions Difficulty: Moderate Things You'll Need Box end wrench (size will vary depending on the make and model of your car) Ratchet with appropriate size socket Cresent wrench Steps 1Step OneThe first thing you need to do is determine that the problem is actually being caused by the alternator, because if you're anything like me, it's always best to do the least amount of work possible. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before doing any electrical work on your vehicle unless you like pissing your pants and have always wanted to try the "Don King" look, but never had the guts. 2Step TwoOnce you have determined that the alternator is the likely culprit for your headlights dimming everytime the bass hits while jammin' to Rump Shaker, you will need to locate the alternator in your specific car (under the hood is likely in most cases). Sometimes it will be in plain sight, but there are some vehicles which require some searching. An automotive manual for your car is always handy. 3Step ThreeOnce you have located your alternator, the first thing you will need to do is remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pully. 4Step FourNext, disconnect the ground cable, then hot wire from the alternator. 5Step FiveOnce all of the wires have been diconnected, there should be two mounting bolts (one on the top and one on the bottom). Loosen and remove these and the alternator should drop right out. It's usually a good idea to take your alternator into your local automotive supply store to have it tested (most will do this for free). This will either give you assurance that you have correctly diagnosed the problem, or crush your spirit because it will be verified that there is a larger issue with your car than you thought."

How hard is it to replace a car alternator? '95 Honda Accord? Is it a do it yourself job or mechanic? If I buy parts online, will it save me money with mechanics?

payton_stewart_1 replied: "not hard all you do is find the part take it off and get a new one and put it on i have a car and changed tons of things on it"

Y- replied: "I used to have one. If I recall it was two bolts and a plug or two for electricity. The trickest part was belts and tensioning. If you can do it yourself, the total will certainly be less than an mechanic doing it. One thing to ensure before spending the money is that it really is a deal alternator and not a bad battery, poor/dirty connections on battery or alternator, loose/bad belt or something else much cheaper."

2000 Honda Accord Alternator Fears? Hello, My husband and I drive a 2000 Honda Accord. Two months ago, we noticed dim dash lights. The mechanic at a shop, upon testing both alternator and battery said it was a weak battery. After replacing the battery, the car died after being stuck in a blizzard traffic jam. We were towed to the Honda dealer who replaced both the alternator and the battery. This morning, I noticed that the dash lights were once again dim and that I heard the same tinny sound from the engine that had been present a day or two prior to the car sputtering to a stop in the blizzard. My question: Should I be worried that we once again will have to replace the alternator and probably the battery? Is this a larger electrical problem that went unchecked by the dealer? I have absolutely no car knowledge, so any advice would help.

ladygentleheart1025 replied: "Check your battery cables and connections as there may be corrosion on them or breaks in the wires. You definitely have a shorting problem somewhere if the lights go dim or flickers. The connection is not being made somewhere electrically. You can also ask a good friend of mine who's a car expert on America's Car Show if that isn't the problem...ask for Tom"

Mike M. replied: "The dim dash lights usually signal that the alternator has gone out and isn't keeping the battery charged, that you are running on the battery's power only, and that the battery is about to run out of current to power the car. But the "Alternator" or "Battery" light on the dash is supposed to come on to alert you to that fact, and you don't mention it. The dealer should have replaced the alternator, but not your new battery! It sounds like the alternator again, but it can't be, if the dealer really replaced it. I don't know what to tell you, sorry, except to take it back to the dealer and tell them what is happening. It shouldn't be happening! The dealer usually does first-rate work, they are just expensive. Hope you find the problem all right. Mike"

I have a 1991 honda accord and i just replaced the alternator and battery and the car still dies.? is there anyone that possibly knows what the problem still could be my car will drive fine and then after a while the battery voltage will start to drop and then it will just die, when i crank it over afterwards it sound like a dead battery but the battery had been replaced, then sometimes it will start again after sitting for a while

Fergmeister replied: "Cable connection? Need more details. Does you're car run, then die after a while, does it not crank at all, does your battery drain immediately, if it doesn't turn over, what sound does it make when trying to crank...etc"

thebax2006 replied: "Chances are you only had a bad battery. I've seen many customers blow the main fuse or "fuseable link" while jump starting a car. After replacing the battery they still get a charge system indicator light lit on the dash and mistake it for a bad alternator. The large fuse or fuseable link is a 100 or 60 amp fuse which is located either on the positive battery cable at the battery or in the engine compartment fuse box. This fuse is bolted into the fusebox on most cars so don't expect it to just pull out like the other fuses."

how do you change an alternator on a 1993 honda accord at? do you have to pop the axcel to remove the alternator and if so do the boots pop off when you pop the axcel or is there a way that they come of before that .if anyone knows the complete steps or even a diagram of replacing the alternator I would appreciate it

mdk68gto replied: "that is the easiest way. but the boots dont just pop off."

Scuba Steve replied: "You don't take off the boots. You remove the half axle with boots and CV joints attached. I replaced the axles on mine last year. It involves removing the wheel then the large nut that holds the hub on [sometimes difficult]. Detaching the lower ball joint [can also be difficult for the novice or beginner]. Taking out the lower bolt that attaches the fork. Pry the axle out at the transaxle with a pry bar and remove it. Then you should be able to get the alternator out. You sure you want to do this?"
