Tokyo Drift Nissan Skyline Posts in Q&A
Tokyo drift Mustang question? I'm sure it's been asked before, but the movie swap of the Nissan (skyline i think?) engine into the 60s fastbacks body, is that even possible in that short of time shown in the movie? I'm thinking too much fabrication. Thoughts on this? Also, if I recall, the fastback had just about nothing in it, just a chassis.

Travis replied: "Possible or not (I'd think not, since ford and nissan have nothing in common)... it's just plain "wrong"... That's a classic car, and the motor that car "deserves" for high performance is a ford 428 cobra jet. Sure, its a little heavier than the nissan motor (but who cares if your drifting anyhow), but the power you can make out of it is limitless. The 428 cobra jet was "rated" for 335 HP, but in reality, made more like 410 from the factory (rising insurance surcharges led manufacturers to under-rate horsepower numbers at the time). And that's 410... FROM THE FACTORY... with truckloads of aftermarket parts available to go from there. Of course, if they were REALLY crafty, they'd get their hands on one of the limited run 427 "Cammer" engines, made in small numbers specifically for daytona. Those were built to take back the trophy from chrysler's 426 hemi cars. The daytona 427's produced an honest 650 horsepower, with twin four barrel carbs. Naturally aspirated... no turbo lag.... what can nissan put up to match that?"

tim replied: "It is possible but would require lots of fabrication work and things like custom drive shafts and stuff. But I agree its total sacrilege and even a 302 or 289 would be more than enough for drifting, the reason they did the swap was purely because there was no stock engine available in japan lol"

supercharged96stang replied: "Travis covered everything. Those people destroyed a wonderful car..."

tricky replied: "I am sure with the right equipment and people it is easily possible, The engine used in the film was out of a silvia although was transplanted in there from a Skyline, the rb26dett engine was released stock in Japan at 276 due to rules which limited all high bhp in all cars up until Jan 05,but Nissan released the GTR Skyline with stock dyno at 330bhp and even then detuned with actual true running power of this car with stock internals at 600bhp and even then the engine can be easily tuned to well over 1000bhp. It is not strange to see big bhp skylines ,there is one in my town with the single turbo engine running a dyno 800bhp and he did his work on the road side outside his house. The RB engine is used often in drift cars in the skyline or as a conversion. I have a car magazine which explains the engine swap in detail if i come across it i will scan it for you."

mazda rx-7 vs nissan skyline? ok ive done alot of research and asked thousand of ppl i am gonna get a car but i dont really kno wat i want i was thinking to get a custom rx7 and make it look like the one in tokyo drift (same body kit etc) but then ive seen a skyline at my job and i like the style can some one help me !@!@ decided . i just want a simple car to start then put it to race : ) ive had a silvia before but wasnt fast enuff for me

Gary K replied: "Well on PlayStation game the skyline seems to be the better car."

wazookieone replied: "my son bought an rx-7 the first year they came out & it has been a "total lemon"!"

300ZX TT replied: "Rx-7 : It is an amazing car! the car handles amazingly well and its rewarding! the best part of it is you would be unique! Its not everyday or even once a month you get to see a modified Rx-7. BUT there is a downside and that is the rotary engine dont get me wrong its an amzing engine! but is not exactly the most reliable. IF you plan on getting an Rx-7 be prepared to fork out cash to maintain the engine! e.g The amount of mileage is equal to amount of Hp you pump out. That said, don't overheat it. Use 93 octane. Warm her up, cool her down. don't overboost. check your oil with every gas fillup. change the oil every 2k miles. And thats the basic. also most Rx-7 are driven to redline and thats what they are meant for, but at 70k miles you would usually need a rebuilt. But please dont be discouraged if your willing to go through all this then go ahead! the car will hold as long as you take care of the car its simple as that... A honda can take a beating and still run, but an RX-7 you will have to pamper, but all that pampering will reward you on the twisties garunteed! Nissan Skyline: AWD simply amazing, i dont think i have to say more. Its alot more easier to maintain than an Rx-7. If you want a simple car to start and race then skyline is your car. Dont get me wrong you will still have to maintain her, but it wont be as much work as the Rx-7 thats for sure! You cant go wrong with either car, the skyline is easy to modify and finding parts are harder to the Rx-7. If i had money coming in regularly id buy the Rx-7, Otherwise id go with the skyline."
