need to see a wiring diagram for a 1986 Volvo 740 starter to alternator? the wiring from the battery is blue and not sure from the starter what the color is,

? replied: "When you get to the starter there will be one big wire from battery and a smaller wire going into the engine wire harness, hooked up to the same terminal. That wire goes to the + side of the alternator. The very small wire on the back of the alternator goes to the dash warning lamp.It should also have a good size wire grounding the frame of the alternator to the intake manifold."

Why is the battery on my 85 volvo 740 gle not recharging from my alternator? I have a 85 Volvo 740 GLE and for some reason the alternator is not recharging the battery. The battery is good, the original alternator is good and the 2 new ones that I have tried are good also. I checked the ground from the negative battery cable and cleaned it up. I replaced the ground cable from the alternator and nothing. My dash lights for "battery, brake, parking brake and a weird symbol" stays on. Now I'm broke with a car that is still not working properly. Please help me. Thank you.

oklatom replied: "The only things left to check are the positive battery cable, and the battery itself."

baldie replied: "it might be the positive cable or a dead cell in the battery or it might be the voltage regulator."

Jus' "Breeding Around replied: "What about the regulator (that is inside the altenator) That could be fried. Have you been jumping other cars with jumper cables? It takes a microsecond with a cross connection to fry the regulator. You have to go to a garage and have them check the output while the altenator is in the car and hooked up to the battery."

Terry S replied: "Voltage regulator.. SUre you got the right alternator and correct battery? Also, look at the computer for that model.. Back then they referred to it as a " Brain " Start the car, and disconnect the battery.. Put a meter on the alternator leads and make sure she putting out about 13 to 14 volts.."

1986 volvo 740 non turbo. last week would not start, changed alternator and battery. Today it would not start ? took it to mechanic he said alterntor was bad. refunded and got another put it in, jumped the car let it idle in driveway. 5 minutes car died would not start . wtf.

vtech replied: "There are many issues with these cars that will cause a no start condition. Can you describe the symptoms? Does the engine turn over but not start? Does the engine not turn over?"

RAY JAY replied: "maybe the starter- spark plugs- fuel filter- ignition coil- get a diagnostic from a volvo specialist instead of guess-chanics,,,"

gostus replied: "I remember having a lot of problems when ground cables from the engine block to the body of the car got corroded and lost contact. It has blown 2 or 3 ECUs before the problem was discovered."

Where can I find an online source for 1990 volvo 740 v belt installation diagrams? I have a v belt for my 1990 volvo 740 turbo. I am trying to find out where I can find an installation diagram that I can either download or print out for the v belt which goes to the alternator.

Lo_dogg replied: "Your particular Volvo belt for the alternator is simple and straight forward which doesn't necessarily require a diagram. There are 3 belts(not including the timing belt) in front of the engine. One for the a/c,one for the p/s and one for the water pump. The alternator belt is the easiest to replace cause it doesn't require removal of the other belts. However, replacing all 3 belts at the same time is recommended. The size of the p/s and the alternator belts are the same(11.9x1013) and the a/c belt is(13x975). You can probably find these sizes at local auto parts store. To make life easier would be going to an independent volvo shop...it's a fast moving parts so they must have in stock at all times. If the volvo shop doesn't sell loose new parts to u then never do business with them....believe me....but if your looking for used parts then that's a different story...why?...cause it's more lucrative.....and that they have a surplus of used parts that taking up space....like a liquidation sale or something.. I hope this info. helps and feel free to ask for additional questions that u have...Thanx!!!!!!!!!!"

Volvo 740 91 Battery Chaging Problem? I have Volvo 740 91, difficult to start, send to repair, replaced startor by repair man, cost $400, after driving 3 days, suddenly all light gone, and died. Towed the car to same repairman and was told that was alternator problem, cost antoer $400, decided to replace it myself. after towed car to my home, i can battery jump to start the car, but wheneve jumper removed, engine died after wihle, i measure the batery voltage, arround 10 volts, when enging is runnig and battery jumpped, 13 volts , but no volltage beteween B+ and ground of alternator, i think alternator bad, boght rebuild one, replace it, same problem. repalce it with antoer new one, still same problem. no continuity between B+ of alternate and + terminal of battery , I wire jummped between B+ of alternator and + of Battery, car works fine and battery voltage and alternator output are normal, no wire loose or errosion found from the view, i think alternator is not the problem, so what's the problem? Please help Is there any control circuits or fuse between B+ of alternator and + of battery? I could not found fuse.

campmano replied: "not unless there is an inline fuseable link. sounds like the wiring harness for the alt. is bad."

i need to know if my car is a factory turbo? I had a wreck in June. My father brought me a 1987 Volvo 740 GLE that he bought from someone. I had a small problem with it in July and he said that it was a luxury edition of that car. Today my alternator belt broke and my brother and I had a hard time finding the belt. We still don't think we got the right belt. Did my car come as a turbo from the factory and someone change the motors?

just me replied: "it came in both vin #8 1b230ft is turbo"

art warrington replied: "volvo 740gle came with out a turbo but had a butterfly valve in the exhaust manifold down pipe, that open up as the revs increased and give it more power"

Battery Installed Backwards. What to do now??? The other day my alternator went. My husband went to put in a new battery so it would have enough charge to bring home. Well, as he installed the new battery he put it in backwards. He said it was only a second the wires touched, but the wires did start smoking. I was hoping I could find advice on what to do next. The car is a 1991 Volvo 740 Turbo. Thank you.

john m replied: "i don't really know ,but I can guess. check the fuses box, cross the fingers, that the computer will be OK. computer is protected by DIODES, but You never know for sure."

duce replied: "You might have shorted out some of the electronics, check the under hood fuses and check the wire harness for damge"

ablair67 replied: "It's a little hard to say exactly. Did it burn all of the rubber insulation off of the wire? Or maybe even burn the wire in two? If not you're probably okay. I mean it wouldn't hurt replacing that ground wire just so later on down the road you don't have problems. Does the car still run? I've had batteries short out and do the same thing. Fried the black wire grounding the battery to the car. Burnt off all of the rubber insulation. My only option at the time was black electrical tape I had in the glove box. I put a battery in it and drove it home. I actually forgot about that "tape fix" I had done until reading your question. I must have driven that truck another 40,000 miles with no problems."

aeronicapilot replied: "This actually happened to me last week. The guy's car had all black wires and you couldn't tell where the wires were going. It did the exact same thing, smoke and all. If you're lucky, there should have been an inline fuse on the positive (red) wire that has blown. Look for anything in that wire. If you're unlucky (I was), it may have gotten to you're alternator. You can take it off and take it to any Advance Auto Parts store and they can tell you for sure if it killed the alternator."

fecomosis replied: "Install it correctly. and Pray it works."

jsph_cerda replied: "Installing a battery backwards is like putting a square energizer battery on your tongue. It sends a charge to all your electrical components, a car that old may not have safety blocks in place to shut down in the event of power surge. Check your fuses, if your car doesn't light up at all when you turn the ingnition, you may have fried all or most of your electrical components. This could include everything from your tail lights to your onboard computer which regulates fuel usage, various pumps and sensors, even various small motors that handle your windows, winshield wipers, or your dashboard consule. You could have a major maintenance fee on your hands if you shorted out your vehicle. If your engine was protected, you may just need to have your computer reset, your local dealership will be able to help with that. but they will be sure to find something else wrong I assure you."
